Wisdom Tooth Removal: Expected Pain Timeline

Are you dealing with wisdom teeth pain or wondering how long it will last after removal? You’re not alone! Wisdom teeth can cause a lot of discomfort, and many people have questions about the process.

In this blog post, we’ll break down what you can expect during recovery, how to manage pain, and when to call your dentist.

How Long Does Pain from Wisdom Teeth Last?

Pain after wisdom tooth removal is normal, but it varies from person to person. How difficult the extraction was and your overall health can affect how long pain lasts. Here’s a general timeline:

1. First 24 Hours

You’ll likely feel some pain and discomfort once the anesthesia wears off. You may also notice some bleeding, swelling, and bruising. During this time, rest and take any prescribed pain medications.

2. Days 2-3

Pain and swelling are typically worse during the second and third days after surgery. You might feel a throbbing sensation around the extraction site, and it may be hard to open your mouth fully. Keep taking your pain medication as directed and use ice packs to reduce swelling.

3. Days 4-7

By the fourth day, pain should start to decrease, although you might still feel some discomfort when chewing or talking. Swelling should also begin to go down. Continue eating soft foods and avoiding strenuous activities.

4. After the First Week

After about a week, most people find their pain has significantly reduced or is completely gone. Swelling and bruising should also be much better. However, some people may still experience mild discomfort for a couple of weeks, especially if the extraction is complicated.
